Leona X – Interview

Leona X

Formerly a member of all girl rock band, Jaggedy Ann.  Leona X now plays good old fashioned Rock and Roll.  I spoke to her about life in the music industry and working with AC/DC legend Phil Rudd.

Gerry:
You stated previously that country music played a big role in your childhood; do you still have a place for it?

Leona:
Absolutely yes, in fact I have been told many times that there is a kind of “cowboy swagger” in some of my songs, and I do write country songs as well. But I like the real edgy rock n roll artists like Jason Aldean, big and rich, Gretchen Wilson, etc.

Gerry:
Growing up, who were your influences?

Leona:
When I was in 4th – 6th grade I was in love with Elvis Presley and his music! He still has a huge influence on me. Then I heard AC/DC and I was never the same. I wanted to be just like Angus young!

Gerry:
How was it working with Phil Rudd?

Leona:
It was a dream come true. Never in a million years did I ever imagine I would be working with one of their guys. Phil was very quiet but his approach was effective. He recorded us exactly like AC/DC does it, old school analogue, reel to reel. He was very insightful and funny too. He had a lot of funny sayings. Like one time holly asked for a splash cymbal, and his reply was, “the only splash I make is in the pisser”!

Gerry:
You are obviously very passionate about music – can you envisage yourself doing changing direction to a different career, perhaps in ten years’ time?

Leona:
Never.  Music runs in my blood and I am not happy without it. :)

Gerry:
What has been the most exciting experience you have had in music?

Leona:
Touring for sure. Recording is fun, but every minute spent performing is the most exciting thing ever. I love being on stage, it’s where I feel the most at home.

Gerry:
Tell me about the rest of the group, is it mainly studio musicians that you work with currently? If so, what are the benefits of this, as opposed to being in a full band?

Leona:
Currently, I have an amazing group of guys backing me up, one of which is my husband on rhythm guitar. It’s great because they are supportive of whatever I want to do. Playing in an all-girl band was fun but makes something that’s already hard to do even more difficult. Too much drama!

Gerry:
Who would you love to play with?

Leona:
Angus young, of course! Also, Joan Jett, or anyone from Halestorm!!

Gerry:
What is next for Leona X?

Leona:
At this time, I am booking shows, building a following, and getting ready to launch a kick-starter campaign to raise funds for recording my new album. I’m so excited!!
